Analysis of a variety of Genres

Pop Magazine- Billboard

The masthead 'Billboard' is black, which makes a statement against the light pink background. A billboard is a large advertisement, so this effectively acts in the same way yet only for music. Some of the letters have been coloured in blue and yellow- these are both bright colours, which are fun, symbolizing the genre- Pop.
Famous singer, Katy Perry posses covering the masthead, this could suggest that her importance is greater than the magazine itself, unlike many other magazines such as Vibe and NME the masthead is not written in capitals also showing its little importance. So even if some people don't necessarily like the magazine, they may buy it because of Katy Perry's feature. The singer is dressed in flowers on her clothes and hair, flowers are quite girly, showing that Katy is quite girly, this suggests to the audience the type of people that represent pop music. The artist body faces away yet her face faces the camera, creating a curve around the text alignment, which creates a appealing structure.
The text includes colours of black, white and yellow. The black and white are quite dramatic against the bright pink, whereas the lemon yellow is quite sweet, the dramatic and sweet representations could also symbolize pop music. The font is the same throughout for everything other than the names of famous people for example 'Katy Perry'. This may also suggest importance of these people. Rhetorical question entices the audience to buy the magazine to find out the answer.

Hip Hop Magazine- Vibe
The masthead ' Vibe' is very bold and chunky, it fills across the width of the page making a statement. The artist Kanye West poses for a headshot that covers most of the page including the masthead, showing that he is the main feature.
There seems to be a shadow behind the artist yet he is in the light also showing importance. Perhaps done with purpose; the colour of the artists color matches the colour of the title, from looking at other covers of the magazine I noticed the colour of the masthead varies, supporting the idea that this was done with purpose. The matching colours create a link between the artist and magazine, symbolizing the type of style the magazine represents- Kanye West.
The text includes colours of pink, blue and black, the bright colours could represent the genre the magazine is focusing on, yet the black is able to make a statement. To the right the contrast of blue and black is used to separate the text of each name. "The making of Notorious 10 B.I.G secrets the film won't tell" A type of pun has been used here on the word 'big' it is used to describe the secrets of the film yet also relates back to the artist it is referencing to, as he is also known as Notorious B.I.G (pronounced as separate letters.)
Notorious is written in italics, other than the text "the truth hurts/ Kanye West "I am rap" these are the only pieces of text written in italics, showing importance, and individuality from the other text.  This report is described as "exclusive" telling us that this information is only available to the readers, enticing the audience to buy the magazine. "The truth hurts/ Kanye west "I am rap" is not all exactly in italics yet is slanted to an angle altering around the artists head positioning showing that they relate. Pages have been referenced so that the potential reader can quickly flick to the page before buying, giving them a short insight.

Indie Magazine- NME
The masthead is bold read, written in capitals and is clearly important as it has nothing around it covering it, 'NME' stands for New Musical Express. An image of Jake Bugg acts as the background yet we are able to see a clear view of his face. The text featuring the artist is placed on top of his image lower down, so we know that the two link.
The colour red seems to reference the most important features, for example the name Jake Bugg,  'Nirvana unseen pictures!' and highlighting the Killers announcement, we know these are most important as they share the same colour as the masthead which seems to be most important. The use of black and white are used to contrast each other, making it easier for the reader to view.
"Nirvana unseen pictures! Exclusive shots from Kurt's early days" This text is written in capitals to show importance, the use of the word 'unseen' invites the reader, accompanied by a few small images of the artist the text is referencing to. These images invite the reader to buy the magazine by being presented as small, to give the reader a glimpse to they have an idea of what to expect. The word 'exclusive', also used in Vibe magazine, again entices the reader, as we know that the information is only available for the readers. Some text is placed in a red circle, similarly to the magazine 'Vibe' a page is referenced so the potential reader is given an insight on how to win tickets to the event. The opportunity to win tickets is advertised in this circle to persuade the reader to look at this point of interest.
